This is not ‘April fool’. This is real… The Governor of Ebonyi State has ordered the Accountant General and key stakeholders in the state to immediately ensure April salaries are paid.
According to the Sun Newspapers, Ebonyi Governor, Chief David Umahi, yesterday, directed the state Accountant General and 13 council chairmen to work out modalities and immediately ensure the payment April salaries to workers to enable them to make vital purchases and be financially buoyant during the two weeks partial lockdown of the state.
The Governor gave the directive in Abakaliki during a statewide broadcast on preventive measures taken by the government to stop the spread of coronavirus.
Umahi appealed to those selling foodstuffs and other essential commodities in the state not to hike the prices of foodstuffs in order to avoid creating more economic hardship on the people.
This is a good move by the government of Ebonyi State in Nigeria. Other states that are financially stable should emulate.
However, I beg to ask the question: “if salaries for April are spent in April, what will be spent in May before the salaries come in by the end of May?”
