The Lagos Mainland and Island road traffic is an epic one. It takes a good round of the early mornings and late evenings into the night. For those who have to meet up with an appointment or clock in on time to avoid query from the HR at the end of the month, the alarm clock is put into good use and early rising is a luxury they can definitely afford.
Thanks to @Gidi_Traffic, road traffic info is always on ground and comes in handy. I was tired of the slow movement, the long hours of horning and waiting and car bashing. The road traffic was surely a disadvantage to me but I turned it into a hobby I usually look forward to. Into something I have always wanted for myself. Following three simple steps, I clinched my goals and I still work towards achieving more. You too can follow the steps and achieve even greater things starting from what you consider little. The steps are simple:
Assess and Evaluate Your Advantage
Just like any other situation we may find ourselves in the office, in our careers, or during a job search, the Lagos road traffic can really set a burden and stand as a tactical delay to your goals. One of the first things you need to do is not to look at how disadvantaged you are in a situation but to critically search for, assess, and evaluate the almost insignificant advantage you may have.
In my own situation what did I do? Okay I was discussing with my colleagues in the staff bus and I thoughtfully asked “Do you know that if one lived and worked in Lagos for at least 30 years, it is possible that 3 to 5 years of his/her life (if not more) may have been spent in road traffic?”
My assertion was received in the positive and come to think of it; spending 3, 4, 5 years alone in road traffic. That’s too much time wasting in wasting time sitting in a car or in a bus. The road traffic was certainly more than just a delay feat but a time wasting drill. So I stopped looking at that disadvantage and turned positive; Hmmm… I can turn the 3 or 5 long years into something actually productive. Wow! I’ve got 3 to 5 great and cool years away from work, away from sleep and away from events. 3 to 5 cool years? Then I must use it for something I can look back at and smile. That’s my advantage!
Develop and Structure A Pattern
So I’ve got 3 to 5 years to work with (all things being equal) and I have to do something with it. I needed to plan and structure and also follow a pattern. At that instant I remembered an article I’d always wanted to write: Employers are Looking for you…. But not all of you! That’s my first professional/career article and I published it on LinkedIn. I pulled out my android phone, checked for OfficeSuite and started tying… That’s how I reignited my writing passion and skill. After almost two years, I regained my passion and started work on myself. I had it in me but work and more work overshadowed it.
I planned and devised a pattern for myself. Every week I must publish an article that must be of my original content and well researched as well as suitable for professionals. And the road traffic will be my basic tool; my hobby abode; my tactical clip for clinching my goal.
Always take action towards your goals. Jack Canfield said:
Successful people maintain a positive focus in life no matter what is going on around them. They stay focused on their past successes rather than their past failures, and on the next action steps they need to take to get them closer to the fulfillment of their goals rather than all the other distractions that life presents to them.
I decided to write in road traffic only. Even now I’m writing this in road traffic (on Third Mainland Bridge, Monday 15/9/2014, 20:26 PM). I go home alone deliberately, make sure my phone is charged, stay a little late at work to finish office work, research pretty well, write my articles spanning over morning and evening traffic. Even in the staff bus, I write and put down something. Over 8 weeks consistently, I published 8 articles and was reignited into my goal of improving my writing career
All articles on this website are written in road traffic and on some Saturdays. I give to Cesar what belongs to Cesar. I never use work time for writing articles. To me, writing is personal and work is professional and I put them way apart (of course my job involves writing as well). This brings to play how we need to prioritize when we need to achieve our goals in our careers and businesses. Discipline must be upheld. Reduce complaint and create time to do things that matter to you. There is never a perfect time for you to start or stand for, something. Your disadvantages may be huge. Huge enough to stop you from getting that job, from breaking into that industry, from getting that promotion you’ve always wanted, that dream life you’ve always envisaged, that music deal you always long for, whatever it may be, YOU CAN BEAT IT! Start looking for little drops of advantages and use them big, really big! Give no respect for challenges. Men that made it never tried just once. In the end, they conquered and won!
Until next time, keep winning and when you see a pretty heavy traffic, I may just be there writing my next article… 😉
