How to Become the Best Version of Yourself: 5 Pro tips to get you started

Becoming the best version of yourself can be an elusive concept to define in the first place. However, it somehow revolves around the pursuit of maximum happiness and a sense of accomplishment and fulfilment.

The chase to become the best you can be is a matter of competing against yourself and it goes beyond facades. It is about working on yourself as a whole including your mind, body and soul. Also, you need to realize the things that keep you from being your best self and start working on to change them.

If you desire to be the best you can be but do not know how to start, below are the simple pro ways that can help become the best version of yourself.

Recognize What You Want

“Know who you are. Know what you want. Know what you deserve. And don’t settle for less.” – Tony Gaskins

The first step to becoming your best self is to know who you are and what you love.

Perhaps you have a talent you’ve always been itching to develop. There could be certain aspects of yourself and your life you know would make you a better person once you change it like being more patient or to have a better relationship with your parents and family.

Identify what it is you want and strive to become it.

Imagine yourself experiencing the fulfilment you want in your life: what does it look, feel and sound like?

Make papers written with a list of qualities you value the most in your personality, the qualities you know will help you achieve what you want, and whenever you catch yourself deviating from those qualities, consciously slow down, take a breath and regain composure.

Stop Comparing Yourself to Others

“Be the first – rate version of yourself and not a second – rate version of somebody else.” – Judy Garland

It can be tough not to compare yourself to your peers. On social media, you see every day pictures of your friends’ vacations, their new jobs, their huge houses, looking all happy as if they have everything figured out.

You might often ask yourself, “Why can’t I be like them, as happy as they are?” But always remember that nobody’s life is perfect and perhaps those people have as many worries as you do, or worse, they got more problems than you have. Ever think about it?

In order to be your best self, you should strive to become as authentic and true to yourself as you can, not become somebody else. Stop comparing and bring to mind that you are in no competition to them. Also, if you continuously compare yourself, you’ll become bitter. What you can do instead is consider yourself as your own opponent and strive to become better every day than your past self.

Quit Your Bad Habits

“First we form habits, then they form us. Conquer your bad habits, or they will conquer you.” – Rob Gilbert

You can be our own worst enemies when it comes to changing yourself for the better. You might be engaging in self-destructive habits and that could be the things that prevent you from becoming your best version.

Habits that are bad for your health such as drinking, smoking, gambling, eating too much, watching TV, may get in the way of this process. Being the best version of you is about working in every aspect of yourself, including your physical and mental health.

As an example, heavy drinking is guilty of many illnesses such as liver disease and anemia, but it can also affect your mental health since it can cause anxiety and depression. All bad habits have negative consequences.

If you have bad habits (or even worse ones, such as doing drugs), it’s best if you quit in order to be present and enjoy your life.

It does not have to be right away since it can never be easy. Take it step by step – reach out to a professional if necessary – and soon you’ll see improvements in many areas of your life you didn’t even know your bad habits were affecting.

Be with People Who Believe in You

“Surround yourself with positive people who believe in your dreams, encourage your ideas, support your ambitions and bring out the best in you.” – Roy Bennett

Once you surround yourself with people who support and motivate you, the process of becoming the best version of yourself will become easier and more rewarding.

Spend less time with people who keep complaining and are plain negative, as those attitudes can be unproductive and contagious.

Instead, learn from others who are also trying to be the best version of themselves, and become a source of positivity for them as well.

If you find your current friends and family can’t offer you a positive environment, you can always try and connect with new individuals.

This doesn’t mean leaving your friends and family behind; you just have to provide yourself the opportunity to meet new people who can give you positive vibes you are needing in your life right now.

Cheer up

“Don’t take yourself too seriously. It’ll just make life harder. Lighten up and learn to laugh at yourself… Sometimes, being your own source of comedy is the most fun of all.”

– Luci Swindoll

Whenever you are messed up, try not to cry over the spilt milk and make the best out of what seems a negative situation. Always bear in mind that there are more things to celebrate for than stuff to complain about. Choose positivity at all times.

Try not to stress about things that you can’t change and work on changing the ones you can.

Laugh if you can and smile if you must. Smile at strangers, smile whenever you say “hello” or “thank you”. Smile at yourself in the mirror every morning. Smile to life.

Research shows that when you smile, even if it’s a fake smile, it can trick your brain into being happy. So, smile anyway!

Deciding to be the best version of yourself can change your whole life. But doing so will require constant effort and determination. The process could be difficult since there is always a tendency to indulge self in negative thinking. It’s a matter of perception after all.

The most important thing is that you’re aware of the areas of your life you want to change and work on it every single day.

Remember that even the smallest actions can lead you to become the best you can possibly be.
